Today is the birthday of one of the world's most well-known African writers. Nigerian poet and novelist Chinua Achebe was born in Ogidi, Nigeria's East Central State on November 16, 1930, and is best known for his 1958 book, Things Fall Apart, a powerful observation of the consequences of European colonialism in Africa. Things Fall Apart remains a relevant work, and is often assigned reading for students. Achebe has also written numerous other novels, children's books, short stories, and poetry.
Achebe has earned many awards over the course of his literary career, including a Man Booker Prize in 2007. He is the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University in Rhode Island, and an active member of academic circles.
