About the book . . .

Framed for Murder (A Pine Cove Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – California
Publisher ‏ : ‎ The Wild Rose Press, Inc. (June 17, 2024)
Print length ‏ : ‎ 284 pages
Digital ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0D18C415T

Synopsis . . . After a life-changing injury, Mel O’Rourke trades in her badge for bed sheets, running a B & B in the quirky mountain town of Pine Cove. Her peaceful life is interrupted when an old frenemy, the notorious and charismatic cat burglar, Poppy Phillips, shows up on her doorstep, claiming she’s been framed for murder. While she’s broken plenty of laws, Mel knows she’d never kill anyone. Good thing she’s a better detective than she is a cook as she sets out to prove Poppy’s innocence.

The situation gets complicated, however, when the ruggedly handsome Deputy Sheriff Gregg Marks flirts with Mel, bringing him dangerously close to the criminal she’s hiding. And just when her friendship with cafĂ© owner Jackson Thibodeaux blossoms into something more, he’s offered the opportunity of a lifetime in New Orleans. Should she encourage him to go, or ask him to stay? Who knew romance could be just as hard to solve as murder?

My Review . . . Former LAPD police officer Emmeline (Mel) O'Rourke recently relocated to the small resort town of Pine Cove, where she manages the Babbling Brook bed and breakfast. Her radical change in employment and environment is the result of a career-ending injury that left Mel with lingering physical and psychological effects that sometimes exacerbate her new circumstances. Never one to back down from a challenge, Mel is determined to regain both her health and confidence while creating new friendships and an inviting vacation destination--despite her lack of social and innkeeping skills. Her predictable day-to-day existence is thrown a major curve, however, when the criminal who played a role in the incident that ended Mel's career comes to town.

Cat burglar Poppy Phillips turns up at the Babbling Brook B & B seeking Mel's help and a safe shelter after a body is discovered at the site of her most recent robbery. The police are hot on her heels and would like nothing better than to arrest Poppy for murder. While she has a long history as an elusive thief, Poppy has never committed a violent crime. Is it possible she killed scientist Kyle Lange, or is she being framed by the real killer? At first Mel is torn between helping Poppy or turning her in--her cop instincts lead her to believe that Poppy is telling the truth, but if Mel helps Poppy, she risks being charged with aiding and abetting a criminal.

Once on opposite sides of the law, Mel and Poppy join forces to clear Poppy's name. Despite warnings from local Deputy Sheriff and possible love interest Gregg Marks to steer clear of his investigation, Mel can't help herself. Once a cop, always a cop. As the women get closer to finding out who killed Lange and why, Mel finds herself in increasing danger. Will she find the killer before becoming a victim herself?

Framed for Murder contains the essential number of suspects, motives, and red herrings to make it an appealing read. In addition to the murder mystery, the author introduces an element of romance with the protagonist entertaining amorous advances from several directions. The extensive cast of eccentric characters--including family members--reinforces the story's small-town feel and presents the potential for ongoing story lines. My curiosity has been piqued and I'll be on the lookout for future installments of this mystery series.

About the author . . . Marla White is an award-winning novelist who prefers killing people who annoy her on paper rather than in real life. Her first full-length mystery novel, “Cause for Elimination,” placed in several contests including Killer Nashville, The RONE Awards, The Reader’s Favorite, and finishing second in the Orange County Romance Writers for Romantic Suspense. Originally from Oklahoma, she lived in a lot of other states before settling down in Los Angeles to work in the television industry.  She currently teaches at UCLA Extension and gives seminars about the art of script coverage. When she’s not working on the next book, she’s out in the garden, hiking, cheering on the LA Kings, or discovering new craft cocktails.

Fun facts . . .

About the book:  The quirky Babbling Brook Bed-and-Breakfast is loosely inspired by the Silver Pines Lodge in Idyllwild. Marla highly recommends staying there if you’re ever in that neck of the woods.

About the author: Marla shares Mel’s nearly debilitating fear of heights. Well, not to the same extent--she can climb a set of stairs--but looking down more than a few flights? No way!

There’s a scene where Mel does a singing bowl session. Marla has done that and thinks it’s pretty cool.

Marla accomplished the dream of becoming a published writer in her late fifties after helping other writers craft their stories for thirty years.

Friday Focus: Bookish Memes to Start the Weekend

 16

It's Friday . . . time to share book excerpts with:

  • Book Beginnings on Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, where bloggers share the first sentence or more of a current read, as well as initial thoughts about the sentence(s), impressions of the book, or anything else that the opening inspires.
  • The Friday 56 which was hosted for many years by Freda's Voice, where you grab a book and turn to page 56 (or 56% of an eBook), find one or more interesting sentences (no spoilers), and post them. Since Freda's blog is currently on hiatus, the meme is being maintained by Anne at My Head is Full of Books. Visit Anne's blog to post and read the weekly entries.

Today I'm featuring A Most Agreeable Murder by Julia Seales. The excerpts shared are from an eBook borrowed from the library.

Book Beginning/First Line:  Chapter 1 -- Introductions

In the English countryside there was a small township called Swampshire, comprised of several lovely mansions and one disgusting swamp.

********************

56% of eBook:  "There is one thing which might be of interest," Miss Bolton said in a soft voice. Drake stoppe pacing and waited for her to continue.

********************

My thoughts:  Protagonist Beatrice Steele is the most unconventional of young women for her time. She flouts the rules of etiquette and acceptable female behavior to pursue her interest in crime solving. When a murder lands on her figurative doorstep, Beatrice demonstrates her talent for finding clues and drawing sound conclusions based on the evidence she observes.

A Most Agreeable Murder is a most enjoyable read. Its balance of quirky characters, mysterious goings on, humor, and plot twists are first-rate. I hope the author plans a return to this setting and time period for further exploits with the spirited Beatrice.

********************

From GoodReads: When a wealthy bachelor drops dead at a ball, a young lady takes on the decidedly improper role of detective in this action-packed debut comedy of manners and murder.

Feisty, passionate Beatrice Steele has never fit the definition of a true lady, according to the strict code of conduct that reigns in Swampshire, her small English township--she is terrible at needlework, has absolutely no musical ability, and her artwork is so bad it frightens people. Nevertheless, she lives a perfectly agreeable life with her marriage-scheming mother, prankster father, and two younger sisters-- beautiful Louisa and forgettable Mary. But she harbors a dark secret: She is obsessed with the true crime cases she reads about in the newspaper. If anyone in her etiquette-obsessed community found out, she'd be deemed a morbid creep and banished from respectable society forever.

For her family's sake, she's vowed to put her obsession behind her. Because eligible bachelor Edmund Croaksworth is set to attend the approaching autumnal ball, and the Steele family hopes that Louisa will steal his heart. If not, Martin Grub, their disgusting cousin, will inherit the family's estate, and they will be ruined or, even worse, forced to move to France. So Beatrice must be on her best behavior, which is made difficult when a disgraced yet alluring detective inexplicably shows up to the ball.

Beatrice is just holding things together when Croaksworth drops dead in the middle of a minuet. As a storm rages outside, the evening descends into a frenzy of panic, fear, and betrayal as it becomes clear they are trapped with a killer. Contending with competitive card games, tricky tonics, and Swampshire's infamous squelch holes, Beatrice must rise above decorum and decency to pursue justice and her own desires--before anyone else is murdered.

My review . . . The smashing success of Keya's recently opened Waterwheel Cafe challenges her to find the right balance between the demands of running a busy restaurant and performing her part-time police work. Fortunately, she has a supportive team of family and friends that help her keep the cafe humming along. But her latest police case has Keya stretching herself to the limit. . .

After young Zaad Bartlett disappears from a local playground he was visiting with his nanny, Keya feels a deep personal connection because of her interactions with Zaad and his parents at her cafe in the days before the incident. As part of the team tasked with investigating Zaad's disappearance, Keya must quickly find the missing boy by figuring out exactly what happened and who is responsible. Will she be able to locate the child and reunite him with his distraught parents in a timely manner? Can she identify and prosecute the kidnapper?

Vanilla Chai and a Vanishing Victim takes readers back to the charming Cotswolds region of England, with its picturesque landscape and cozy atmosphere. The plot of the story is solidly constructed with a satisfying number of red herrings and unexpected twists that keep readers guessing whodunit until the book's final chapters. Beyond the mystery, author Victoria Tait has created an inviting setting and cast of characters that readers will enjoy visiting again and again whilst enjoying a variety of teas and other delicacies. Each installment in the series introduces a new tea to savor and crime to solve. I can hardly wait to discover both a new brew and Keya's next case in book four.
