First Chapter ~ First Paragraph

It's Tuesday . . . time for . . .

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, now hosted by Vicki at I'd Rather Be At The Beach, where bloggers post the first paragraph(s) of a book they are currently reading or planning to read sometime soon.

Today I'm featuring an upcoming read, The Forgotten Room by Karen White, Beatriz Williams, and Lauren Willig.  The excerpt shared is from a hardcover version borrowed from the library.

The patter of rain against the blacked-out stained glass dome above where I sat numbed me like a hypnotist's gold watch.  Neither the hard marble step beneath me nor the delicately carved staircase spindle pressed against my forehead was enough to override the lullaby effect of the raindrops.  I tried to focus on the ornate staircase of the old mansion, to study the fine architectural details of the structure that even the conversion into a hospital couldn't mask.

What do you think?  Would you continue reading?
I find the descriptive quality of the first paragraph--the stained glass dome, marble step, and carved staircase--totally captivating.  I'm immediately swept back in time to Manhattan's Guilded Age.  I am eager to begin this multigenerational story set across several time periods, which is written by three wildly talented authors.

Waiting on Wednesday: Flight Patterns

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature of the Breaking the Spine blog.  It's a great way to share information about forthcoming books with other readers.  Today I'm featuring Flight Patterns, a new novel from Karen White, which will be released at the end of May.

Flight Patterns
Publisher:  Penguin Publishing Group
Publication Date:  May 31, 2016

From barnesandnoble.com:  The New York Times bestselling author of The Sound of Glass and coauthor of The Forgotten Room tells the story of a woman coming home to the family she left behind—and to the woman she always wanted to be...

Georgia Chambers has spent her life sifting through other people’s pasts while trying to forget her own. But then her work as an expert of fine china—especially of Limoges—requires her to return to the one place she swore she’d never revisit...

It’s been thirteen years since Georgia left her family home on the coast of Florida, and nothing much has changed, except that there are fewer oysters and more tourists. She finds solace seeing her grandfather still toiling away in the apiary where she spent much of her childhood, but encountering her estranged mother and sister leaves her rattled.

Seeing them after all this time makes Georgia realize that something has been missing—and unless she finds a way to heal these rifts, she will forever be living vicariously through other people’s remnants. To embrace her own life—mistakes and all—she will have to find the courage to confront the ghosts of her past and the secrets she was forced to keep...

Which book are you waiting for?
...Will you add this one to your list of must-reads?
