Can't-Wait Wednesday

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Tessa at Wishful Endings which spotlights and discusses forthcoming books that bloggers are looking forward to reading. Generally it's about books that haven't been released yet. This meme is based on Waiting on Wednesday, formerly hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.
There are so many exciting new books on the horizon, so without further ado, this week's Can't Wait For book is . . .
The Death of Mrs. Westaway
Publisher:  Gallery/Scout Press
Publication Date:  May 29, 2018

From Goodreads:  From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game comes Ruth Ware’s highly anticipated fourth novel.

On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.

Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.
My thoughts:  I was totally consumed by the author's first two novels, In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10.  Ware is a captivating storyteller, and my plan is to read The Lying Game before this latest novel is published and then dive into the new release.

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph

It's Tuesday . . . time for . . .

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea, where bloggers post the first paragraph(s) of a book they are currently reading or planning to read sometime soon.

Today I'm featuring an upcoming read, No One Knows by J.T. Ellison, which I borrowed from the library.

CHAPTER 1
Aubrey
Nashville
Today

One thousand eight hundred and seventy-five days after Joshua Hamilton went missing, the State of Tennessee declared him legally dead.

Aubrey, his wife--or former wife, or ex-wife, or widow, she had no idea how to refer to herself anymore--received the certified letter on a Friday.  It came to the Montessori school where she taught, the very one she and Josh had attended as children.  Came to her door in the middle of reading time, borne on the hands of Linda Pierce, the school's long-standing principal, who looked as if someone had died.

What do you think?  Would you continue reading?
J.T. Ellison has been on my list of authors to try for a while now, so this book and this month seem like a good place to start.

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph #119

It's Tuesday . . . time for . . .

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea, where bloggers post the first paragraph(s) of a book they are currently reading or planning to read sometime soon.

Today I'm featuring my current read, The Blue by Lucy Clarke, which I borrowed from the library . . .

 The Blue: A Novel

PROLOGUE

A body floats, unseeing eyes fixed on the brooding sky.  A pair of cotton shorts has darkened, pockets gulping with water.  A shirt billows, then clings to the unmoving chest.  The streak of blood across the right temple has washed away now, leaving the skin clear and graying.

What do you think?  Would you continue reading?
This book first caught my eye when I saw it on Greg's Book Haven.  As summer comes to an end, reading this mystery set at sea is my attempt to hang on to the season.

Friday Focus: The Friday 56 & Book Beginnings #79

16
It's Friday . . . time to share excerpts book excerpts with:
  • Book Beginnings on Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, where bloggers share the first sentence or more of a current read, as well as initial thoughts about the sentence(s), impressions of the book, or anything else that the opening inspires.
  • The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice, where you grab a book and turn to page 56 (or 56% of an ebook), find one or more interesting sentences (no spoilers), and post them.
Today I'm featuring:

The Stranger

BeginningThe stranger didn't shatter Adam's world all at once.

That was what Adam Price would tell himself later, but that was a lie.  Adam somehow knew right away, right from the very first sentence, that the life he had known as a content suburban married father of two was forever gone.  It was a simple sentence on the face of it, but there was something in the tone, something knowing and even caring, that let Adam know that nothing would ever be the same.
*********************
Page 56 "Adam felt like saying that they had bigger problems, but maybe for now, this distraction would be helpful."
*********************

From GoodreadsThe Stranger appears out of nowhere, perhaps in a bar, or a parking lot, or at the grocery store. His identity is unknown. His motives are unclear. His information is undeniable. Then he whispers a few words in your ear and disappears, leaving you picking up the pieces of your shattered world.

Adam Price has a lot to lose: a comfortable marriage to a beautiful woman, two wonderful sons, and all the trappings of the American Dream: a big house, a good job, a seemingly perfect life.

Then he runs into the Stranger. When he learns a devastating secret about his wife, Corinne, he confronts her, and the mirage of perfection disappears as if it never existed at all. Soon Adam finds himself tangled in something far darker than even Corinne’s deception, and realizes that if he doesn’t make exactly the right moves, the conspiracy he’s stumbled into will not only ruin lives—it will end them.

 The Kind Worth Killing
The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson

I loved this author's previous novel, The Girl with a Clock for a Heart, which was a twisty thriller that I couldn't put down.  The Kind Worth Killing is just as good so far.

BeginningPart 1
The Rules of Airport Bars
Chapter 1
Ted

"Hello, there," she said.

I looked at the pale, freckled hand on the back of the empty bar seat next to me in the business class lounge at Heathrow Airport, then up into the stranger's face.

"Do I know you?" I asked.  She didn't look particularly familiar, but her American accent, her crisp white shirt, her sculpted jeans tucked into knee-high boots, all made her look like one of my wife's awful friends.

Waiting on Wednesday: Descent

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature of the Breaking the Spine blog.  It's a great way to share information about forthcoming books with other readers.  Today I'm featuring the new thriller coming early next year from Tim Johnston.

Descent: A Novel
Publisher:  Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill
Publication Date:  January 6, 2015

From barnesandnoble.comThe stunning vistas of the Rocky Mountains reveal a dark and deadly side in this brilliantly conceived thriller about family ties and the fight for survival.

Descent, the story of a family undone by the disappearance of a daughter who went out for a morning run and didn’t come back, is stunning in its emotional impact--a compulsively readable page-turner with a strong literary sensibility.

The girl’s vanishing--on a sunny, late-summer vacation morning--all the more devastating for its mystery, is the beginning of the family’s harrowing journey down increasingly divergent and solitary paths, until all that continues to bind them to each other are the questions they can never bring themselves to ask: At what point does a family stop searching? At what point does a girl stop fighting for her life?

Johnston captures every emotion, every terrifying thought, every moment of loneliness, from the perspectives of everyone in the family—as each in his or her own way assumes responsibility for their collective loss. And in the father we see the last flicker of hope as he pursues every angle and refuses to give up in his belief that his daughter is still alive. Ultimately he finds an answer, in a climax that is stunning in both its execution and its resolution.

This combination of a great story and beautiful writing brings to mind the works of Tim Gautreaux, Dennis Lehane, and Russell Banks.

Which book are you waiting for?
. . . Will you add this to your list of must-reads?

Friday Focus: The Friday 56 & Book Beginnings #55

16
It's Friday . . . time to share excerpts from a current or upcoming read with:
  • Book Beginnings on Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, where bloggers share the first sentence or more of a current read, as well as initial thoughts about the sentence(s), impressions of the book, or anything else that the opening inspires.
  • The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice, where you grab a book and turn to page 56 (or 56% of an ebook), find one or more interesting sentences (no spoilers), and post them.
Today I'm featuring my current read:
 Catch Your Death

Beginning -- Prologue, Sixteen Years Ago
The world was on fire.

Or maybe she wasn't in the world any more.  Maybe this was Hell.  The heat, the taste of sulphur on her tongue, the sickness, the torment.  Screams rang through the air, relentless, monotonous, a one-pitch yell of despair.  She opened her eyes and saw a figure stooping over her; a hovering devil, with flaming red hair.  She tried to shout but all that came out was a rasping noise, and the devil's face was close, the brimstone smell of its breath in her nostrils.

------------------------------

Chapter 1  -- Present Day

The woman lying on the bunk appeared to be dead, until she sneezed; the violent motion making her skinny body spasm.  She opened bloodshot eyes and lifted an arm, trying to pull a tissue from the box on the bedside cabinet.  But as she reached out, her body spasmed again and she knocked the box to the floor.  Too weak to pick it up, she lay still, until a further series of sneezes rocked her body like gunshots.

*********************
Page 56 (from the ebook):  "He just had one of those faces which made her want to smile: a lovely curved mouth, great big brown eyes, and the sort of floppy hair which she had adored in Robbie Williams in her teenage years."
*********************

My thoughts -- The descriptive scenes in the prologue and first chapter drew me in immediately, and there's enough mystery in the opening chapters to keep me turning the pages.

Which book are you reading now or about to start?

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph #67 and Teaser Tuesdays

It's Tuesday . . . time to share book excerpts with:
  • First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea, where bloggers post the first paragraph(s) of a book they are currently reading or planning to read sometime soon.
  • Teaser Tuesdays hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading, where bloggers post two (2) random “teaser” sentences--no spoilers allowed--from their current reads to try to entice others to seek out these books.
Today I'm featuring the opening paragraphs and a teaser from Missing You  by Harlan Coben.

Missing You

Chapter 1

Kat Donovan spun off her father's old stool, readying to leave O'Malley's Pub, when Stacy said, "You're not going to like what I did."

The tone made Kat stop mid-stride.  "What?"
---------------------------------------------------------------
Teaser: "'Ever see the movie Chinatown?' he asked.
'Sure.'"  ~ p. 124

What do you think?  Would you continue reading?
The opening lines make me curious and have me wanting to know more.  I'll definitely be reading on.  I'm new to Harlen Coben's books, having listened to the audio version of Gone For Good, which I enjoyed earlier this year.

What are you reading now or planning to read soon?

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph #59

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph Tuesday Intros is a weekly meme hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea. It's an opportunity to share the first paragraph(s) of a book I am currently reading or planning to read sometime soon.

Today I'm featuring the opening from I've Got You Under My Skin by Mary Higgins Clark, which I borrowed from the library.
I've Got You Under My Skin: A Novel

Prologue

Dr. Greg Moran was pushing three-year-old Timmy on the swing in the playground on East Fifteenth Street in Manhattan, not far from the apartment.

1

Laurie Moran looked out the window of her office on the twenty-fifth floor of 15 Rockefeller Center.  Her view was of the skating rink in the middle of that famous Manhattan complex.  It was a sunny but cold March day, and from her vantage point she could see beginners there, wobbling unsteadily on their skates, and in sharp contrast others who moved across the ice with the grace of ballet dancers.

Timmy, her eight-year-old son, loved ice hockey and planned to be good enough to play with the New York Rangers by the time he was twenty-one.  Laurie smiled as her mind filled with the image of Timmy's face, his expressive brown eyes sparkling with delight as he imagined himself in the position of goalie in future Rangers games.  He'll be the image of Greg by then, Laurie thought, but quickly gave herself a mental shake and turned her attention to the file on her desk.

What do you think?  Would you continue reading?
