Today is the birthday of Maya Angelou, who was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri.  Dr. Angelou, a celebrated author, educator, and humanitarian, is well known for her writing, which includes her classic autobiography, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.

Dr. Angelou is a wise, eloquent, graceful woman who, despite great personal tragedies and societal prejudice, has worked toward making the world a better place.  She is widely acknowledged as a role model, visionary, and American icon.  More information on the author's life and work is available online at Maya Angelou Global Renaissance Woman, her official website, and from biography.com.

The 84-year-old author has published a new memoir, the just-released Mom & Me & Mom, Angelou's account of her relationship with her mother.  BookPage has an insightful interview with the author about her latest work which can be read online in Lessons of Love from the Mother Who Left Her Behind by Amy Scribner.
